Best Poster Award at ISWC 2016

Carlos Buil-Aranda, together with co-author Olaf Hartig (previously a visitor to the group), won the "People's Choice Best Poster Award" at ISWC 2016 for their poster entitled "Reducing the Network Load of Triple Pattern Fragments by Supporting Bind Joins", which investigates techniques to execute queries efficiently, in a cooperative manner between a server and its clients, over the Web. The award was given for receiving the most votes from attendees at the poster session.

SWSA Ten-Year Award at ISWC 2016

Jorge Pérez, Marcelo Arenas and Claudio Gutierrez were awarded the Semantic Web Science Association (SWSA) Ten-Year Award as the International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2016) in recognition of the considerable impact that their paper "Semantics and Complexity of SPARQL" has had on the community since its original publication at ISWC 2006. The paper outlined a formal framework for SPARQL that has been cited and reused in hundreds of subsequent works studying the query language.

Best Research Paper at ISWC 2016

Renzo Angles and Claudio Gutierrez were awarded "Best Research Paper" at the International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2016) for their paper entitled "The multiset semantics of SPARQL patterns". The paper provides a formal comparison of the various ways in which negation can be expressed in SPARQL and possible semantics to characterise negation when duplicate results are allowed.

Pablo Muñoz awarded with "VCLA Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award"

Former Undergraduate student and current PhD student Pablo Muñoz under the supervision of Pablo Barceló obtained the "Vienna Center for Logic and Algorithms Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award". This award is given by one of the most important institutions in Computer Science in Europe and Pablo has been invited to present his research work at the center this year.

Best Student Research Paper Award at ISWC2014

Marcelo Arenas (director of the CIWS) along with Juan Sequeda, PhD student of the University of Texas at Austin, were awarded with the Best Student Research Paper Award at the International Semantic Web Conference 2014 at Riva del Garda (Italy). The awarded work, titled "OBDA: Query Rewriting or Materialization? Cor Baayen Award 2014

The Cor Baayen Award is given annually by ERCIM, the "Europan Research Consortium on Informatics and Mathematics" to a promising young researcher in the field of Informatics and Applied Mathematics. This year the award has been given to Dr. Juan Reutter, Associate Researcher at the Center for Semantic Web Research. He will be giving a honorary talk at the annual ERCIM meeting in Pisa, on October 23th.

ACM PODS Test of Time Award 2014

Claudio Gutierrez received last june the ACM PODS Test-of-TIme Award for the paper "Foundations of Semantic Web Databases", written jointly with Carlos Hurtado and Alberto O. Mendelzon (+). PODS is the premiere international conference on the theoretical aspects of database systems, and The ACM PODS Alberto O. Mendelzon Test-of-Time Award is awarded every year to a paper or a small number of papers published in the PODS proceedings ten years prior that had the most impact in terms of research, methodology, or transfer to practice over the intervening decade.
